How to Choose a Wedding Bartender in Oklahoma (What to Ask, Red Flags, and the Licensing Reality)
Choosing a wedding bartender sounds simple until you realize you’re essentially handing someone the keys to your guests’ experience for the entire night. A bad bar situation with long lines, watery drinks, an unlicensed bartender, or someone who has no idea what they’re doing can tank a reception faster than a bad DJ.
We’re The Sipsy Schooner, a mobile bar and wedding bartending service based in Newcastle, Oklahoma. We’ve worked weddings across OKC, Norman, Edmond, Yukon, Moore, Mustang, Guthrie, and beyond, and we’ve heard enough horror stories from couples who booked the wrong person to know this topic deserves a real conversation.
So here’s what you should actually be asking.
First, Let’s Talk Licensing — Because Most People Don’t
This is the part of the conversation that makes people uncomfortable, so we’re putting it first.
In Oklahoma as of July 1st, 2026, the Oklahoma ABLE Commission is rolling out a brand new Event Bartender License specifically for bartenders working private and special events like weddings. This is a separate license from the standard Employee License, and it requires in-person training to obtain.
Here is the part most couples never think to ask: Can I see your license?
If a bartender hesitates, gives you a vague answer, or tells you licensing does not apply to private events, that is a red flag. It applies. A legitimate, professional bartending service will hand you their license without blinking.
At The Sipsy Schooner, every member of our team holds current ABLE licensing and has completed state-approved alcohol server training. We are also insured and licensed to serve across Oklahoma, as well as Arkansas and Texas. We are not listing that to brag. We are listing it because it is the baseline, and you deserve a bar team that clears it.
The Questions Worth Asking Before You Book
1. Are you licensed and insured?
Already covered above, but worth saying twice. Ask for the license. Ask for proof of insurance. Any professional service will have both and will not be weird about providing them.
2. What is included in your package?
The answer to this question separates full-service bartending companies from someone who just happens to bartend on weekends. A real package should include more than just a person behind the bar.
At The Sipsy Schooner, every package includes a custom alcohol shopping list, ice, cups, straws, napkins, mixers, and garnishes, plus a beautifully styled bar setup. You supply the alcohol (that is how dry hire works, and it saves you money). We take care of everything else.
If a quote you are getting is suspiciously cheap, find out what is not included. Sometimes the price does not cover setup, breakdown, supplies, or even the number of bartenders you actually need for your guest count.
3. Do you offer a tasting?
A bartender who offers tastings takes their craft seriously. You should not have to serve drinks at your wedding that you have never tried. We offer tastings so you can design your perfect menu before the big day. Signature cocktails that match your theme, flavors you actually love, and a menu that feels like you.
4. What is your experience with events my size?
Someone who mostly does backyard parties of 30 people may not be equipped for a 200-person wedding reception. Ask specifically about guest count, event type, and how many bartenders they will be bringing. A good rule of thumb is one bartender per 75 guests, though it depends on the format of your event.
5. Do you offer mocktails?
This one matters more than most people realize. Not everyone at your wedding drinks alcohol, whether that is your sober friends, family members in recovery, pregnant guests, or the kids running around the reception. A bartender who only knows how to make cocktails leaves a whole table of people with a cup of Sprite and zero elegance.
We include mocktail service at no extra cost with every cocktail package. That is not a marketing bullet point for us. From day one, The Sipsy Schooner has been committed to making sure everyone at the bar gets something thoughtfully crafted and genuinely delicious. No one gets left out at our bar. Ever.
Red Flags to Watch For
They cannot tell you their licensing status clearly. Vague answers about whether they need an Oklahoma ABLE Event License are not acceptable. They do! If they do not know what that is, that tells you everything.
No insurance. If something goes wrong at your event, a slip, an over-served guest, property damage, you want a bartender who is insured. If they are not, that liability can land on you.
No written contract. Any legitimate vendor will have a contract. If someone is quoting you over text with a handshake agreement, keep looking.
Cookie-cutter menus only. If your options are “open bar from a premade list” and nothing else, you are probably not working with someone who actually cares about the drink experience. You should be able to customize.
They do not ask about your guest count, venue, or vision. A bartender who does not ask questions before giving you a quote is not doing their job. The logistics of a 30 person pool party are different from a 200 person wedding reception. Good bartenders know that.
They cannot name their supplies. Fresh-squeezed juices, house-made syrups, quality mixers. These things matter. If you ask what is going into your cocktails and the answer is vague, so are their standards.
The Bottom Line
Choosing a wedding bartender in Oklahoma is not complicated, but it does require asking the right questions. Licensing, insurance, experience, customization, and mocktail service are not extras. They are the minimum you should expect.
